STREET STYLE

As part of a project for school, I had to go around taking photos of people who were (in my opinion) well-dressed. It didn't seem like an easy feat because this is Singapore we're talking about, where the standard dress-code for the unforgiving and unpredictable weather seems to be a simple combination of tee-shirts, shorts and slippers. But to my surprise there were quite a few people who were decked out in outfits that were well-put-together, different and intriguing. It definitely wasn't easy--maybe because I'm picky or I wasn't where all the fashionable people were--and the photos below were taken over a course of 4 days in various locations. But it's good to know that there is a group of Singaporeans, if limited, with good style and taste. Here are my picks:

TOPSHOP KNIGHTSBRIDGE, 16/03/11

I like how his punk edge contrasts with her cute-as-a-button look. And he's wearing a harness!

Fringe details--I couldn't figure out whether this was a separate piece, or part of her top. Great for layering, nonetheless.

Black doesn't have to be boring: she's wearing all black but in different textures--leather for the collar, shaggy for the top, and a matte faux leather for the tights.

ION ORCHARD, 17/03/11

I like how her headband, wallet and Doc Martens add pops of colour to an otherwise monochromatic outfit.

My kind of look--boho meets gypsy meets grunge.

ORCHARD ROAD/SOMERSET, 17/03/11

Dashes of hot pink bring this outfit to a whole new level. That naked lady brooch adds a touch of playfulness to the ensemble, and he's wearing a black hairband and bowtie if you can't see.

I salute this girl for wearing a safari jacket in this weather. The untucked hood of her hoodie contributes another layer of contrast.

SOMERSET, 18/03/11

Striking tights instead of plain black ones make this outfit so much more interesting.

FLEA MARKET, NEAR TANGLIN MALL, 19/03/11

Kudos again for wearing a fringed scarf in this heat. Even her umbrella matches her outfit, while her off-white, lace-up canvas shoes spell utilitarian chic.

The girl on the right makes use of a leather harness (new trend?) as the perfect way to dress up an otherwise plain black maxi dress. Love her patent burgundy boots as well.

I have some other pictures that I may post up at a later date. Seeing style like this gives me reassurance that Singapore isn't all dead when it comes to fashion.

CREEPERS

Yes/ No? I see them as an alternative to the Doc Martens that are everywhere now, and they can pass off as casual as chucks, or dressed up with long socks. Wouldn't mind getting a cheap pair if I can find one.

LIGATURE

Love this editorial shot by Kate Cox for Ligature magazine because it differs from the usual 2D stills.

FLORA

Codie Young by Nicole Bentley for Vogue Australia

Beautiful use of leaves and flowers for the hair--goes perfectly with the lush styling.

RODARTE SS 11

A little late but I just found out where those amazing Ming vase shoes I saw on Tumblr were from. An exquisite collection combining influences from redwood trees, Ming vases and subtle oriental prints. I love the textures, the prints, and the attention to detail, and the story about the Mulleavy sisters' rise through pure talent never fails to inspire me.

VINTAGE ENVY

Just came across this blog: Jessica (I'm guessing that's her name, from her lookbook.nu account) is a self-confessed "vintage whore", and going by her outfits, I don't blame her! I mean, if I could find half the amazing clothes she has whenever I go thrifting at the Salvation Army or wherever, I wouldn't need to buy brand-new clothes, forever. Sighing in jealousy now. Maybe Singapore's fashionable people aren't in the spirit of giving their lovely things up away to charity (i.e. me), and 80% of the clothes that I see while thrifting are meant to stay in their dusty tombs. Gotta start praying to Jessica's 'vintage god' soon.

LEILA SHAMS

Gorgeous dresses by up-and-coming designer Leila Shams. I love the albino aligator prints and the greys on the silk/chiffon--they remind me of Chinese ink paintings, plus I'm a sucker for anything flowy and floaty.
