MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISINAL

So for class this term we have to create a garment by upcycling (the process of using second hand clothing and pre-loved materials and transforming them into new fashion garments) and while researching I came across the work of Maison Martin Margiela. His Artisinal line is like haute couture in terms of the workmanship, but using unusual, pre-loved or vintage materials and re-working them into something completely different.

jacket made of old luggage bag; necklace/bracelet (?) made from old keys

bathrobe made of dyed vintage unused bath towels (love the patchworked textures); waistcoat made of white canvas sneakers

trenchcoat made of calico shopping bags; jacket made of vintage sports bags (love how the original details and embellishments of the bag are retained to become functional parts of the jacket)

dress made of oil canvas paintings; jacket made from zipped nylon travel garment bag

top made from bits of old shoes

dress made of strips of denim

"fur" jacket made of plastic garment label fastenings, the kind they use to attach price tags (I can't imagine the hours of work put into this)
dress made of hair combs

It's one thing to recycle old clothes and things, but it's something else completely to re-work it into something amazing, wearable and well-tailored. So my hat's off to MMM--I am completely in awe, and I hope that I can make something that comes somewhere close to his brilliant work.
